If You Died Today..
If you died today, where would you spend eternity? Christian apologist and novelist, C.S. Lewis once said, "Christianity asserts that every individual human being is going to live forever, and this must be either true or false. Now there are a good many things which would not be worth bothering about if I were going to live only seventy years, but which I had better bother about very seriously if I am going to live forever." So, ask yourself, if you were to die today, where would you spend eternity? For some, this question may be easier answered than others. Regardless of what your answer may be, each and everyone of us should live each day with eternity in mind.
The Bible often talks about eternity: Heaven and Hell. Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) warns us, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Think through these verses. Where are you placing your treasures? Is your wealth on earth, or are you storing up eternal treasures?
Often, our culture is focused on the here and now. We say, Carpe Diem: Seize the day, while putting eternity in our rearview mirror. The irony comes as we turn our back on the very thing we are headed towards. Whether we are ready or not, eternity is coming. Each glorious sunrise and awestriking sunset brings us one day closer to eternity. Author, preacher, and theologian, Harry Ironside said, “Time is given us to use in view of eternity.” So, what we think about and do subconsciously reflects our answer as to where we will spend eternity.
The question is, how are you spending your time? Are you glorifying God? Are you living with eternity in mind? Living for the present may satisfy you momentarily, but it will not quench your ongoing thirst. The only one who can save you is the One who put the world into motion. The One whose Love is unconditional. There is a spot for you in eternity; whether that be in heaven or hell, your eternity isn’t something that you can avoid. The second you die, you will face Judgement Day.
Are you ready?
“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.’” - Revelations 7:9-12 (ESV)
