Power in Unity

“Everywhere we go, people wanna know, who we are, so we tell them. We Are the Titans! The Mighty, Mighty Titans!”

Teamwork. When you think of coming together as one, what comes to mind? For me, I think of the movie Remember the Titans. Based off a true story, the movie reflects the struggle of a Virginia high school football team in 1971, as they face the implications of the integration of blacks and whites. Before they could play as a team, they had to learn to respect one another. Once they found that respect, they were able to have a lifechanging season. Not only was the power of their unity displayed on the field, but the power of the team coming together also helped shape the entire community.

There is a certain power behind a team with a common mindset. Although there have been many great teams uniting under a shared goal, there is one team that is the greatest of them all; the team of believers united together through a relationship with Jesus Christ.  Galatians 3:26-29 (ESV) says, “[F]or in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.” Honestly, Christians have the perfect team. Each of God’s children is gifted in different ways, making God’s army very well-rounded. When Christians unite and work together for the glory of God, nothing is impossible. In fact, we have a secret weapon. Not only is God on our side, but He is also our life-coach and MVP!

There are many challenges that arise to thwart team unity. For believers, the devil is our greatest adversary. Whatever the challenge or obstacle may be, a united front is the strongest way to pull through. United teams stand up for one another. United teams have each other’s backs. Teammates are there to lift one another up and teammates are there to correct each other when they start thinking/acting selfishly.

Later on, in the movie, Sheryl Yoast blatantly stated, “People say that it can't work, black, white, here we make it work every day. We still have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans.” In life, you won’t always get along with everyone, not even those whom you share common beliefs with. If you focus on Christ and unite with other believers for His calling, the Power of God will be displayed. With unity comes power and with power comes the ability to move mountains in Christ’s name. It is amazing the things that are possible through the power of God and the unity of believers!
