Grow in Knowledge

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;” – Proverbs 2:6 (ESV)

Christianity, like any other area of life should be full of growth. Growth is not a rush from Point A to Point B; it is full of up’s and down’s, but always there is progression. As your knowledge of the world increases, you grow as a person. Walking through life you learn and through that walk you grow! The same goes for Christianity. At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit is working within you; walking beside you through times of difficulty and teaching you along the way.

Isaiah 11:2 (ESV) tells us, “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”

So, what goes better hand in hand with growing in faith than the Holy Spirit leading us to grow in knowledge? You can’t have one without the other! As you grow in faith, your knowledge most surely is growing too.  Chinese Christian teacher Watchman Nee said, "If whatever men know comes through their brain without the Holy Spirit regenerating their spirit, then their knowledge will help them not one whit. If their belief rests in man's wisdom and not in God's power, they are merely excited in their soul."

Point blank, we need God to know God. It is His desire for us to get to know Him. It is part of His plan that we grow in Him. When Adam and Eve ate of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, it opened them up to just that: good and evil. What didn’t come with that newfound knowledge was the understanding of it. Just like Adam and Eve, we can see good and evil, recognize it, but not have the understanding as to “why bad things happen to good people.” Therefore, we need God. He is the giver of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Apart from Him, our knowledge is worldly and vain. As we pray the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. As we dig into God’s word, the Holy Spirit reveals truth to us; leading us to grow in knowledge! At the center of growing in faith and growing in knowledge is Christ. You cannot understand without knowing and abiding in Him!

Proverbs 9:10 (ESV) – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
