Grow in Obedience
James 1:22-25 (ESV) says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”
We have looked at faith and knowledge as they relate to one another, but obedience is the third corresponding piece. I remembered a children’s song that I learned years ago. It went, “O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E, obedience is the very best way to show that you believe!” As cute as this song may be, there is much truth within its simple message. What shows faith better than action in the form of obedience?
When it comes to God’s Word, obedience is not only commanded, but it is also the biggest exemplifier of our love for God. If we truly love him, we will want to obey him. Just like any normal child/parent relationship, out of love parents set rules and guidelines for their children to follow. Although the child may or may not understand why these rules are in place, it is his/her love and respect for their parents that they choose to obey the rules!
Pastor and Speaker John MacArthur said, "True faith is never seen as passive - it is always obedient." Obedience is what God demands from us. It is the action of our faith, played out in real life. The Christian life is about action. We are not called to be complacent in the world, but to practice and live in obedience to our one true King and Savior: Jesus Christ. It isn’t until we start living life for Christ that we will experience what true faith is like! Within our obedience to Christ, there is submission to Him; letting Him take a hold of our hearts and lives, saying “Lord, here I am, I am all Yours.”
Don’t wait around living a passive life. The time is now to activate your faith and live in obedience to Christ!
“For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God. Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.” - Psalm 86:10-12 (ESV)
